Compost Bin
When you start composting, you will need to decide whether you wish to buy or build a compost bin. While you certainly could buy a compost bin, you could also just as easily build your own compost bin as well. A compost bin is used to hold waste as it deposited. Within a year, the waste will become usable fertilizer for your garden.
One of the simplest and easiest ways to build a compost bin is to use a length of wire fencing. Section off an area of yard approximately three to four feet by the same amount. Encircle the area with the wire fencing and make sure that it is secure.
In order to get your compost bin started, you will need to begin by placing a layer of grass clippings or leaves in the area. After this you can then begin adding in scraps and wastes from your kitchen on a daily basis. Items that you can add include coffee grounds, eggshells, fruit peelings, vegetable peelings, etc. When more grass clippings and leaves become available you can add those in as well.
Another method that you can use for building a compost bin is to use a large drum, about fifty-five gallons. You will need to drill some holes in the lower portion of the drum. Do not forget this step. Next, fill the drum with grass clippings and leaves. Then, add in your kitchen waste. Ideally, it is best to have a lid for the drum. This will help the compost to decompose faster so that you can make use of it faster. Drums are excellent as compost bins when you do not have a lot of space available to you.
There is also another method that you can use for building a compost bin as well. Wooden pallets will be needed for this method. You can often find these available either for sale or sometimes even for free from companies. You will need about ten pallets and some hinges to hold the bin together after you form a box with it. Once you have formed the box, fill it just as you would with any other compost bin so that it can begin cooking.
Once your compost bin has become full, you will need to move the material to a second compost bin so that it can finish cooking and then use the first compost bin to hold new material as it becomes available.
